If hair loss is caused by infection or disease such as anemia, treatment of infection or disease may prevent further hair loss. In some cases, even after cancer treatment, hair may begin to grow again.

Male-pattern baldness
There are two drugs that are known to be effective in treating male pattern baldness: minoxidil and finasteride.

Female pattern baldness
Currently, the only drug available to treat female pattern baldness is minoxidil. Minoxidil lotion may help hair grow to 20-25% of women who use it, and most can slow or stop hair loss.

Other treatments for hair loss are the wigs, hair transplants (taking hair from the sides and back of the head) and plastic surgery such as reduction of the scalp, the bald area is removed and the hair is pulled forward.

Alopecia Areata
There is no completely effective treatment for alopecia areata.
However, in about eight out of 10 cases, the hair grows back after a year without treatment.
